Laboratory

Main Laboratory

The laboratory is split up into 7 different areas, labelled Lab A, B, C, D, E, F and G. Each lab area is centred around a work bench and raised service beam running down the middle, with rows of fume hoods either side of the bench. These areas contain almost all of the equipment and resources that you will need for your experiment, the rest being situated close by for groups to share. Below is a schematic diagram showing the layout of the main laboratory. For more information on what equipment can be found where, see the equipment pages.

Fume Hoods

In total there are 80 two-person fume hoods accommodating up to 160 students at a time. The fume hoods are fully integrated and serviced with compressed air, nitrogen, natural gas, vacuum and water taps with sinks on either side of the hood. The fume hood sashes are there to ensure the experiments are contained within the fume hood, and that the hood is properly ventilated. These should be pulled down to the indicated level during all experimental work. The scaffolding inside allows easy attaching of clamps when setting up for experiments.

Each fume hood also has a corresponding fume hood locker, containing a variety of equipment. Opposite the hoods there is bench space for writing notes in your lab books and computers with internet access which can be used for research or data analysis.
