The use of instrumentation is an integral part of the undergraduate course. Teaching labs has a dedicated instrument room specifically for undergraduate use during practical sessions, the same equipment is also used by postgraduates for research outside of normal lab times. Information and specifications on each of the different instruments can be found below as well as detailed instructions on their use. These instructions can also be found alongside the instruments in the instrument room.
Information on accessing data from instrumentation. All instruments provide data in electronic formats only.
Most instrumentation in Teaching Labs is available for use by researchers outside of teaching time.
Instruments are categorised on this page based on how the instruments are used. 'Walk up' instruments are open access instrumentation within the Teaching Labs, where you record your own data in the laboratory. These are techniques which are quick to run, providing immediate results. Samples for 'submission services' are prepared and submitted in Teaching Labs through the submission of a sample and a form to request the analysis. Typically these are either for analyses which take longer to run, with instruments collecting data 24 hours a day using autosamplers, or for technques where specialist skills are required.
Many of the submission services are provided by the Chemistry Analytical Facility (CAF) as departmental services. The webpages for the CAF provides further information on each of the techniques which can be found via the link below:
