Compact Photometers

Instrument

Teaching Labs have built 30 compact photometers which are primarily designed for the facile collection of kinetic data. The photometers use an LED as the ligh source, with a suitable LED being identified for use on an experiment specific basis.

Use

Kinetic data

The photometers are primarily designed for the collecting of kinetic data. They are best suited for reactions resulting in the formation or loss of an intensely coloured species. The photometers perform poorly where one coloured species is converted to another coloured species at a similar wavelength. The photometers are limited by the range of commercially available LEDs.

Photometric data

The photometers can also record photometric data with the same limitations as for kinetic data. The photometers work well where an intensly coloured species is being measured in isolation of other coloured species.

Accessing data

Data is available in the Photometer folders. You will need the name of the computer used (found on label on screen), the channel of the photometer and the date and time of your run.  The default file name is in the format yyyymmdd_hh_mm_channelX. Data is available in CSV format only.
