Equipment

Equipment Overview

There is a broad range of equipment which students in teaching labs will need to be familiar with when carrying out practical chemistry. You will be introduced to this equipment throughout your first few weeks in labs by demonstrators and technicians, but these pages show a summary of what is available and where it can be found. Alternatively, there is information available on glassware  and instrumentation which is also used in teaching labs.

There are three main areas where you will find the equipment you need:

Fume Hood Lockers

Fume hood lockers contain non-glassware equipment that you will need individually to carry out your experiment. They are labelled to correspond with the fume hood area you are working in.

Service Beams

The service beam is the raised platform in the middle of the lab benches. This is where you will find chemicals, consumables and any specialist equipment for your experiment.

Around the Lab

Other, sometimes larger, equipment is situated around the lab for students to share. You will become very familiar with some of this equipment in your first year, but some will only be used by project students later in their degree.
