Style Guide

When preparing documents for communicating work, it is common to follow a style which defines how various elements of the document will appear to readers. Most journals have "style guides" or "author guidelines" which provide details of the writing and formatting expectations. The Department of Chemistry at York has also developed its own guidelines for use when preparing documents.

Before preparing any documents, you should seek guidance around which styles and conventions should be adopted. You should then construct your documents following these guidelines.

Templates

In order to assist with document preparations, many journals also provide templates which can be downloaded to assist with document preparation. The department also provides a basic Microsoft Word template which may be useful when preparing reports.

It is also possible to replace your default word template so that all new word documents are created using this template. On windows 10 & 11 the file is located in the folder "C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates" (where username is your username). This folder will contain a file called normal.dotm which can be replaced with the file below.
