Schlenk Lines
Setting up a Schlenk line
The exact requirements for setting up a Schlenk line ready for use will vary depending on the design of the specific line and personal preferences. However, it is usual to undertake the following steps:
Fit the solvent trap to the line.
Ensure that double oblique taps are all closed.
Open the line air bleed.
Allow the pump to ballast (pull through air) for a few minutes.
Close the air bleed and allow the pump to begin pumping down the line.
Check the Pirani gauge is turned on and look for vacuum leaks on the line.
Position the liquid nitrogen Dewar around the solvent trap and fill with liquid nitrogen.
Turn on the inert gas supply to the line to give a steady flow rate through the oil bubbler.
Depending on the exact design of the line, you may find additional features which require consideration, for example:
Secondary solvent traps
Tap to isolate the Schlenk line from the pump
Taps to isolate the vacuum gauge from the line
Empty oil traps connected to the gas manifold
