Safety Overview
Preparing for a Safe Lab Day
Ensure you have read and understood the script (including the risk assessment) and have completed any pre-lab briefing material as directed by a member of teaching staff.
Plan your work carefully, ensuring you don't need to rush.
Never come into the lab under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Let your supervisor know of any medical conditions that could affect your work, e.g. allergies, implants or pacemakers.
Wear appropriate clothes - no open toed shoes, no shorts, tie long hair back, no contact lenses.
General precautions
Never take food or drink into the lab.
Always consult a demonstrator if you are unsure of what you are doing.
Use a fume hood with the sash as low as possible for all chemical manipulations, except the weighing of non-volatile solids which can be done at a balance station.
Don't leave heat sources on unnecessarily and don't leave near flammable solvents.
Never take chemicals out of the lab.
Don't evaporate any solvents in quantity, into the air, even in fume cupboards.
Don't use chipped or cracked glassware
Don't pipette by mouth.
