General lab supplies are available throughout the whole of teaching labs and you shouldn’t have to go far to find what you need for your experiment. Running down the middle of each lab bench is the service beam, where you can find the following trays of equipment and consumables:
Magnesium sulfate drying agent
Cotton wool
Parafilm
Filter paper
pH paper
Magnetic wands
Brass rods
Stationary (pens, pencils, rulers etc.)
Pasteur pipette teats
Weighing boats
Magnetic stirrer bars
calculators
Common aqueous solutions that you may need during your experiment:
2 M sodium hydroxide
3 M hydrochloric acid
Saturated brine
Saturated sodium Bicarbonate
These trays contain short Pasteur pipettes. If you need long pipettes for a specific purpose, ask at the hatch and a technician will be able to assist.
Trays of small glass sample vials are available, alongside screw top lids.
Melting point tubes are available on the service beams in small plastic trays. These are also available next to the melting point equipment in the instrument room.
Aluminium foil for reaction insulation and salt for ice baths are found next to the columns on each service beam.
Disposable nitrile gloves in sizes XS-XL are available on the service beams. If you would like to talk about alternative glove options (e.g. for skin sensitivity or size issues) please ask at the hatch and a technician will be able to assist.
Alongside these general supplies, the service beam will also hold trays of experiment-specific supplies, such as :
The solvent trays contain Experiment-specific solvents in enough quantity for the number of students carrying out that particular practical. These trays will be either orange, pink or green depending on which cohort you are in.
Chemical trays contain Experiment-specific chemicals, usually one container of each chemical per set of balances. These trays will usually be red, blue or green.
The purple TLC trays contain all of the necessary equipment to carry out thin layer chromatography, including:
TLC plates cut to an appropriate size for you to use
Glass spotters
Pencils
Rulers
Forceps
Plastic syringes are available in a range of volumes from 1-20 mL alongside short and long needles, septas, and balloons.
For experiments with specialist glassware or equipment, such as nitrogen bubblers or multi-neck flasks, this will often be in a tray on the service beam for you to collect when needed and return at the end of the day.
If anything on the service beam runs out, or you require something that isn’t available, please ask at the hatch and a technician will be able to assist.
